One More Amazing Space at Elm House
Not every AFC Group Home has its own personal interior designer. Elm House is Blessed to have Designer and painter, Joe Mehalescu as a friend. Joe owns Old School Painting (734) 770-5379. He called us up and said he had a couple extra days and what did we want done. Joe fixed and remodeled our small conference room. Residents meet with case managers and guardians in the conference room. The resident computer lab is also in that room. Staff use it for audits, meetings and other uses. Joe did his magic and now the room feels bigger, cleaner and serene. Joe and his wife Iris donate the decorations.
Night to Shine
Six of Elm House Residents went to The Tim Tebow Foundation's Night to Shine Dance. The Event was held by 242 Church Monroe at Monroe Community College. The event was spectacular!
We had fun finding new suits and dresses. With limited budgets we visited thrift stores and clearance racks. Everyone looked like a million bucks!
One of our young women took advantage of the free hair styling the day of the dance. Marcella, from Cella-Mar Studio of Hair Design, did a wonderful job on the hair style of our resident.
At the event the participants received a corsage or boutonniere. As they entered the event there was a red carpet welcome. Then a night of dinner, dancing, limo rides, karaoke and fun!
Our residents enjoyed meeting Miss Monroe County 2023, Reese Johnson and Miss Monroe County's 2023 Teen, Sawyer Seitz.
Thank you to everyone that made this special event happen. Our residents are already looking forward to next year.

Happy New Year!
Welcome 2024! Elm House is glad for the hope of good things to come. Good bye to 2023. We survived a flood, leaking roof (and replacement), bed bugs, repairs to doors, ceilings and floors, covid19, staff shortages and more. Of course the saddest part of 2023 was losing Pam, our beloved resident.
We welcomed in the new year with food, fireworks and fun.
Pray for Elm House residents and staff to be blessed in 2024

Patty Davies From Salon Be Takes Care of Resident!
Patty Davies from Salon Be gave Elm House resident a new short hair cut. Elm House resident Marilyn gave us permission to share this story. When she was ready to start Chemo she went to Patty at Salon Be to get a short haircut. Patty understood the process and gave her advice on how to keep her head comfortable. When Marilyn was ready she went back to Patty and got the rest shaved off. Patty did that service for free and was very encouraging to Marilyn. Thank you Patty for your kindness! Please pray for our special resident as she is on her healing journey. Marilyn is one of the nicest people in the world!

DTE Energy Employees Make Improvements to Elm House
Two amazing group of employees from DTE Energy came to help out Elm House. The first group Cleaned out the attic (huge job), removed a rotting tree, cleaned up the help yourself garden and planted flowers, back yard clean up, pulled weeds, cleaned middle court yard, picked up branches from the storm, trimmed a tree, moved furniture to the upstairs and more. A week later the second group made repairs to our front deck, built a raised flower bed, built a sign for our upcoming fundraiser (craft show Sept 16), took apart a rotting picnic table, power washed the house and deck and more.
Both crews were hard working and very helpful. Elm House staff and residents are so grateful to have the help. The crews saved us money and time. They made Elm House safer and look better. Thank you DTE for investing in this community. Thanks to all of the employees that came out. You all made a difference!

Hearing is Believing!
Elm House resident JoAnn, hugs audiologist Elliot from Precious Hearing. JoAnn was in need of new hearing aids. Her insurance would not cover them. For over a year she was isolated. Elm House staff and this wonderful community came together to make sure JoAnn could hear again. JoAnn contributed what she could, but the hearing aids were thousands of dollars. Breaking Barriers Foundation donated a large amount and hosted a Quartermania Fundraiser to raise even more. They covered half of the cost!! (Thank You!!). Elm House staff are hosting a Craft Show Fundraiser to raise that last bit JoAnn owes for the hearing aids.
JoAnn is a new woman! She is talking and laughing all the time now. We are so grateful to Breaking Barriers Foundation, Elliot at Precious Hearing, and our own Elm House staff.
The craft show will be Sept 16, 2023.

Welcome to the most
FANTASTIC TV/Theater room ever!!!
An unfortunate flood of our TV room at Elm House turned into a fortunate opportunity to create a Fantastic Space! A plumbing accident cause significant damage to our TV room at Elm House. With the insurance money and some volunteer time we were able to make some upgrades to the room. We replaced the damaged carpet with new LVP flooring. Al Imber and Dr. Dave Rapasky installed the flooring. Our painter and friend, Joe Mehailescu, repaired the walls, ceiling and other damaged areas. Then Joe asked if he could volunteer to add some pizzazz. Joe was an art teacher and had some fun. The results are a fun and fantastic Theater room! The room has an Art Deco feel. There is a desk area and place for information and art. A separate TV for playing the Wii. And a new 75 Inch smart TV! We are living large in our "West Elm Theater". The residents love it!!!

Shared Treasures
Home, Inc. Executive Director Sandy Imber ran into past Co-Worker Cindy Robinson. Cindy was in the process of closing the office of the late Dr. Ralph Hutchinson of the Self and Family Behavioral Healthcare practice.
Cindy stated she had some good office furniture and supplies left after their office sale. Elm House staff went over and picked out 2 truck loads of office furniture, cabinets, artwork and other miscellaneous items. We had a wonderful time and received some nice updated desks. Thank you to Cindy and the family of Dr. Hutchinson.

Slipper Party at Elm House
Our friend, Barb, was at it again. She enjoys looking at our Wishlist and seeing what are the latest needs of Elm House and the residents. She recently sent over enough slippers for each resident to have a new pair. Everyone also got to pick out new curtains for their bedroom windows. The staff enjoyed some upgraded kitchen utensils too.

A little bit of Christmas in February!
2022 Ends With One More Act of Kindness for
Elm House Residents!

Barb, a Friend of Elm House, saw on our website wish list that we were looking for new dining tables. We specifically wanted 36 x 36 restaurant style tables. Barb went on the hunt. She talked to her friend Willa Deller. Willa's late son, Steve, worked for MTS Seating in Temperance, MI. Willa called the staff and owner there. They were happy to help. Well, a few weeks ago, MTS seating delivered 5 refurbished restaurant style tables with brand new legs. They also set up the tables. The tables were everything we were hoping for.
The kind men that delivered did not want any recognition. But we are so grateful and appreciate the wonderful donation and the time and money it took to make this happen. This is our wonderful community in action. Thank You Barb, Willa, the owner and staff of MTS Seating!!
The dining area at Elm House looks like a nice café now. We love when the community partners with Elm House to bring dignity and love to our residents. Wow!

Elm House hosted their annual Christmas party. There was excitement in the air and plenty of gifts around the tree. We started the evening with games and a snowball fight. Residents enjoyed throwing the fluffy snowballs as staff member, Roberta, sat in the middle of the room.
Appetizers and Christmas dinner were prepared by Michael Lyons, Executive Chef from La-Z-Boy assisted by Heidi Lyons, Elm House staff. They both volunteered their time and talents to make dinner delicious and extra special.
Gifts were handed out after dinner. Several groups help make gifts possible, including Dr. Greener, his staff and patients, Breaking Barriers, The Home, Inc. Board of Directors, our friends Barb and Beth, Elm House staff and a few others.
Thank you to everyone that showed love to Elm House residents by giving time, gifts, and money. Santa would be proud. Merry Christmas!

Elm House is Ready for Christmas! (Almost)
Elm House residents have been working hard decorating the house for the Christmas season. The house is beautifully decorated with 2 Christmas trees, homemade wreaths and pretty lights. There is excitement in the air as gifts get put under the tree. The residents are doing their shopping for others and making wish lists. We are planning an outing to drive around and look at Christmas lights. Of course we stop for hot chocolate and sing Christmas carols.
Happy Holidays to all the friends and family of Elm House!!

Fun Updates for Elm House Laundry Room & Medication Room
Joe Mehailescu, from Old School Painting (734-770-5379) was at it again. He had some free time and asked what rooms needed painted. The medication room and laundry room at Elm House were in very sad shape. Joe went to work and repaired the walls and ceilings and then painted the rooms in very cheerful colors. Joe donated all the decorations and upgrades to hardware, window treatments and such. He even made a coffee bar for the staff. Two of our staff got in the spirit and donated the money to upgrade the residents snack shelves. Everything is wonderful and uplifting. Thanks again Joe!!!

Summer turned to Fall overnight. Wednesday we went to the Toledo Mud Hens game and it was almost 90 degrees. Friday night residents were sitting out by the fire table with a cool 55 degree night.
The Mud Hens won their 12th straight game. A league record! The residents and staff ate ballpark food and were treated to some ice cream. Perfect laid back day at the ballpark.
Friday night after chores and snacks some of the residents relaxed by the first backyard fire of the fall. We purchased the fire table 2 years ago during the COVID-19 shut down. We have enjoyed many cool evenings by the fire.
Thanks again to the Community Foundation!

Adventurous residents from Elm House went on a camping trip to the KOA. The weather was perfect. We had good company, good food and good fun. Some residents relaxed and read a book. Some went fishing, swimming , paddle boating and even down the water slide. A few yard games were played, including corn hole. Good food included steak, garlic potatoes, salad, blueberry pancakes and bacon. Of course we had classic treats of s’mores one night and campfire pies the other night. Elm House gets a Furniture Makeover Thanks to La-Z-Boy!
Susan Vanisacker and Laura Castiglione, from La-Z-Boy, Inc. Corporate Headquarters, contacted Executive Director Sandy Imber with some great news. La-Z-Boy was making a generous donation of fantastic furniture to Elm House! The timing was perfect. Elm House was in need of some upgraded furniture. We never dreamed we would get so many quality La-Z-Boy pieces. Elm House has a very large living room and there was enough to fill the room. La-Z-Boy also donated a beautiful rug and some art for the walls. The residents were thrilled. The staff were in awe of the donation. They appreciate La-Z-Boy, Inc. partnering with them in this important work. This was a much needed boost to our décor and our spirits. Thanks La-Z-Boy and Thank you Susan and Laura!! Thanks to the wonderful men that delivered the furniture too!
Thank You to Joe and Iris Mehailescu!
Joe and Iris Mehailescu were honored Sunday at the Elm House fair parade picnic for the generous contribution to Home, Inc. Joe is a contractor that was hired to update our MSHDA MI Home in our community. Home, Inc., rents the house to adults with disabilities. Joe did an excellent job and then went above and beyond what he was hired to do and decorated the whole house. Joe did the designing and he and his wife Iris provided all the funding for all the furniture and supplies. The house is beautiful and the 2 people that live there now are thrilled. They did not have any items to furnish or supply the home, so they were happy to have it already furnished and professionally decorated.
Iris and Joe Mehailescu, Sandy and Al Imber, Dick Sager and Paula Baker (front) gather to thank Iris and Joe for their generosity and Joe's excellent work.
New Fire Alarm System Installed at Elm House with
Community Foundation of Monroe County Grant!
The Community Foundation of Monroe County awarded Elm House a grant from The McGovern Charitable Fund and Healthy Youth Healthy Senior Fund. The grant was used to replace our antiquated fire alarm system. The old system was inadequate for a facility housing 15 individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illness, traumatic brain injuries, hearing impairments and/or mobility issues. We were especially concerned for our hearing-impaired residents that take out their hearing aids and cochlear implants at bed time.
The new state of the art fire alarm system was installed this week by Summit Companies. Strobe horns were installed in each bedroom, resident bathrooms, hallways and common areas. The frequency of the alarm in the bedrooms is set to disrupt sleep. The frequency in the common area is set to motivate people to move out the door. They system is monitored 24 hours a day. The monitoring company will call for EMS. Elm House staff only have to worry about getting residents to safety.
The residents of Elm House are much safer from fire incidents this week then they were last. All the residents, staff and Board Members are excited to be a part of this important upgrade.

New tree honors memory of Elm House supporter Barbara Ann Schwab
Suzanne Nolan Wisler (Article taken from Monroe News 10/7/2021)
Jack Schwab’s efforts to remember his late wife have improved the grounds at Elm House, 852 W. Elm Ave.
A group home for adults with developmental disabilities, mental illness and traumatic brain injury, Elm House is operated by Home, Inc., which also runs Community Supported Living Arrangements.
Several years ago, a dogwood tree was planted on the grounds of Elm House, in memory of Mr. Schwab’s wife, Barbara Ann Schwab.
Last spring, Mr. Schwab noticed the tree was declining.
“It had been beautiful and healthy the year before, but now died,” said Sandy Imber, executive director of Home, Inc. “Mr. Schwab thought it might have been due to the late spring freeze. That tree was special to him because it had been planted in honor of his late wife.”
“Mrs. Schwab loved the work Home Inc. was doing at Elm House and with Community Supported Living Arrangements,” said Imber. “Her husband explained her passion and that she had a heart for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness. She was a champion for the cause."
Mr. Schwab offered to replace the dogwood with a Forest Pansy Redbud.
“With his money and help from Snow's Nursery, LA Lawn, volunteers and residents, the tree was planted and watered all summer. The tree is healthy, and the residents are happy to see it in their yard,” said Imber.
Last week, Mr. Schwab visited Elm House with his daughter, Erica Sottile; son-in-law, Andre Sottile, and grandchildren Andrew and Genevieve.
“Mr. Schwab extended a special thank you to Elm House residents Michelle Parriet and Robert Bulmon. They made sure the tree had water all of this hot summer,” said Imber. “Mr. Schwab and his family are having a special plaque made to place by the tree with Barbara Schwab’s name and dates of service on the of board of directors.”
Mrs. Schwab served on the board of directors for Home, Inc./Elm House from 2005 until her death in 2010.
"Barbara generously shared her experience and skills as both a registered nurse and clinical psychologist to help write new policies and procedures for services at Elm House that improved the lives of residents," said Imber. "She deeply loved the residents and their families. Barbara was involved in fundraising and other activities to improve the health of the agency and the lives of the residents. Barbara also recruited other board members. She invited Paula Baker to be on the board in 2007. Paula is now the board president for Home Inc.”
